Turtle Season

You can swim with turtles here in any month. But between October and April this coast runs one of the great wildlife spectacles on the planet.

Four species, one lagoon, all year.

The Great Barrier Reef hosts six of the world's seven marine turtle species. Four of them use the waters around Lady Musgrave Island — green, loggerhead, hawksbill and flatback — which makes the lagoon one of the most dependable places anywhere to get in the water with a wild turtle rather than hope for a glimpse of one.

The lagoon holds several cleaning stations — patches of coral where turtles deliberately park themselves so small fish can graze the algae off their shells. The fish get fed, the turtle gets a valet, nobody negotiates. Our crew will point out where they are before you get in, because a stationary turtle is far easier to watch than a swimming one.

Approach rules are simple and we enforce them: stay horizontal, keep two metres back, never get between a turtle and the surface. It needs to breathe more than it needs a photograph.

October to April

The cycle, in four acts.

Oct – Jan

Nesting

Hundreds of females haul ashore after dark, dig above the high-tide line and lay 100–120 eggs. Most will return two or three times in a season, then not nest again for years.

7 – 11 weeks

Incubation

Sand temperature decides sex — warmer nests skew female, cooler skew male. Which is exactly why a warming climate is a turtle problem, not just a coral one.

Jan – Apr

Hatching

Thousands of hatchlings break out at night — 5–7cm, 15–30 grams — and run for the lowest light on the horizon. They imprint on the beach as they go, and the survivors return to it three decades later.

The next 30 years

The lost years

Roughly one hatchling in a thousand reaches breeding age. Those that do can live 50 to 80 years — so the turtle you swim with in the lagoon may well have hatched before you were born.

How to see turtles with us

  • Any month, in the water. Snorkel the lagoon on our Reef Day Tour and you'll be sharing it with resident turtles. No season required.
  • Stay dry if you'd rather. The glass-bottom boat crosses the same cleaning stations, which suits small kids and non-swimmers.
  • Nov to Jan, on the sand. Guided island walks pass fresh nesting tracks and body pits from the night before — the clearest evidence you'll see in daylight.
  • Be straight with you: turtles nest and hatch at night, so our day tours can't promise either. It has happened on a day trip. It is rare.

Mon Repos, after dark

If watching a nesting turtle or a hatchling run is the thing you've come for, the place to do it is Mon Repos, fifteen minutes from Bundaberg — the largest concentration of nesting loggerheads in the South Pacific.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife run ranger-guided encounters from the Mon Repos Turtle Centre through the season. Tickets are theirs, not ours, they sell out weeks ahead, and they're worth the planning.
